Landscaping

Jarosky Mid planting

Since 1984 Suburban landscaping has been creating and installing creative, custom landscapes for our clients in Illinois and Indiana. As a catch-all phrase for most people, the term landscaping does cover many of our services, however we like to think of landscaping as it's own unique specialty.

The skilled artistic talent of beautifully combining a wide pallet of trees, shrubs, ground covers, and perennials to create a unique, appealing landscape is one that takes time and experience. Knowing the plant is only part of the creative process that our designers work within. Choosing the right size plants, the right color combinations, and the bloom time are all equally important.

Quality Installation

detailed landscape planting

Once the plants have been chosen, the locations selected, and the design perfected, the physical labor part begins. The installation of the plants according to the design is a time-consuming task that requires lots of strong backs, the right tools, and the knowledge and experience to install the landscape correctly. The science of installing your new landscape is in the well supervised hands of talented, experienced crews. But, they are not alone. Our management staff oversees every step of the installation of your new landscape, and is in constant communication with the crews, ready for any questions or clarifications that may be needed. At Suburban Landscaping the installation of your landscape truly is a team effort.

Nursery Selection For The Best Plants

Deck plantings 1

As in any profession, there are some companies that are better at some things than others. The same is true of nurseries that grow plants. We have a very large group of nurseries that we work with to get the right plant, in the right soil, with the right quality that you would expect from Suburban Landscaping.

Often, landscape companies grow their own plants, and nurseries install the plants they grow, which is fine if you want the plants they have instead of the best plants for your home or project. At Suburban Landscaping we specialize in the design and installation of your new plantings, not selling you what we have in stock. We design your new landscape to fit your home, not to sell you our inventory.

The Right Plant For Your Project

With an every growing list of plants to choose from, the options can be overwhelming for the do-it-yourself homeowner. We are sure everyone has seen a beautiful looking plant overgrow the bed that it was planted in, and then either trimmed beyond recognition or removed and money wasted. As professionals, we select the right plant for each location is your landscape, and the right variety of the plant to fit exactly the size space you have to work with.

Often we hear clients say they planted a "dwarf" plant, and they cant understand why it grew so large. Plant names can sometimes be misleading. For example, the shrub Euonymus alatus can grow to be 35' tall while the "dwarf" Euonymus alatus compactum will still grow to be 25'tall. Not much of a dwarf...

Landscaping Prices

Backyard landscape

In landscape planting the plants are always the most expensive part of the project, and the cost of landscape plant material has been steadily rising since 2004, showing no sign of leveling off. There are way to many variables in landscape planting to offer an answer to what landscaping costs. All estimates are calculated to include labor time needed to install the project, plant and material costs, and profit. We also factor in the travel time to your site and the guarantee on your plants. After more than 30 years, we have streamlined the process and are very accurate with our estimates. After saying all of that, an idea of cost could be this: not many trees and shrubs can be planted for under $1,500. Removing and renovating your home landscape would probably be over $3,000. Commercial landscape planting usually is much more. Basically, costs come down to how much you want done.

Landscape Design

Even though we can do stages or phases in our designs, we always suggest to do as much at one time as possible. Travel time, clean up time and loading time are costs that happen for each phase of a project. If you can do a project with only one trip, that will save you considerable monies.

Lawn Renovation

Maintaining a beautiful, lush green lawn is sometimes a difficult task for even the most seasoned home gardener. Quite often the knoledge of horticultural practices needed to sustain a lawn are just not available, and when this happens lawn can perish. We are very familiar with this cycle and are here to help. Not only have the tools and techniques to help save your existing lawn, we also can prodive new turf in many forms.

It is quite common when a new home is built that the lawn installed is a sun-loving blend of seeds or sod that look and grow great. However, as the years pass and the trees mature, the sun becomes more and more filtered and the lawn mecomes thinner and thinner. What was the correct seed or sod at the time is no longer the proper type of lawn for under your big, beautiful shade trees. When this happens, we are here to help.

 Sodding

For an instant green, healthy lawn, nothing beats the transplanting of a new lawn into your yard. Sodding just does this, rolls of sod are cut from a sod farm and then transplanted into your property. When kept moist, the new sod lawn starts growning almost immediatley, needing to be mowed withing about 10 days. There are several advantages of installing sod over seeding, the first of which is the instant gratifacation of an imediates new lawn. Second, sod is very expressive. If you are not watering it enough, sod will show signs of drying, shrinking, or discoloring rather quickly, telling you it needs more water.

Seeding

A seeded lawn is a stronger lawn than transplanting sod into your yard. A home-grown seeded lawn will have a deeper root system and be a little healthier than sod.

Natural Landscape Stone Installation

Natural stones are just that, stones that are found in nature. In a world filling up with man made brick pavers and retaining walls, natural stones are becoming rare and often unique in landscape designs. Natural stones look and feel different from the typical concrete blocks and pavers that are most commonly used in landscape construction. Random shapes and sizes are the hallmark of natural stones, but they also can be cut or milled into a more formal, dimensional product. Used in many different applications such as retaining walls, bed edging, patios, sidewalks, ponds and fountains, accent pieces, steps, and even house facade accents and coynes.

If you are looking for a unique, natural look for your landscape project, then you have come to the right spot. Below are several of the many types of natural stones we offer our clients.

Flagstone

A wonderful and versatile natural stone, Flagstone has become the most flagstone 2popular catch-all or generic name for a myriad of  natural stone products. Usually a sedimentary stone created in a quarry from fissable planes of sandstone and quartz, with the different colors come from an infusion of silica, iron oxide, or calcite.

As very attractive paving material, most flagstone used in landscaping are earthy toned colors such as sandstone, pale red, or tan. Used as both a paver for patios in outdoor living, or as retaining walls and steps. Often, natural flagstone is used as a natural stepper pathway embedded in a surround of mulch or stones. Natural flagstone is an irregular shaped stone that comes in a variety of thicknesses and sizes, no two pieces every look alike. The installation of flagstone is a more time consuming process than with pavers or retaining wall blocks due to the jigsaw puzzle type fitting together of pieces. Our trained landscape staff are very knowledgeable about the installation of flagstone and the mason like techniques used to trim, snap, and break pieces to the right shape and size. For more pictures of flagstone, visit the examples of our work page.

Bluestone

A rather unique natural stone, bluestone is a similar product to flagstone, yet blue in color. Usually milled for a dimensional shape, bluestone also comes in irregular shapes and sizes. Bluestone is also a great paving choice not only because of its color, but also because of its non-skid texture when wet. Bluestone is slightly more expensive than flagstone and because of that, it is usually not used in retaining walls like flagstone.

Outcropping StonesOutcropping Stone

Offered in a variety of colors and styles, outcropping stone is usually an accent piece in a landscape that gives the illusion of a natural planting environment or habitat. Outcropping stones vary in size, but are usually from 3" thick to 18" thick or more. As large visual elements in the landscape, outcropping stones are a unique, heavy focal point to any landscape design.

Cobblestone

A very popular aesthetic boulder choice is cobblestone. Available in sizes cobblestone brick patioranging from 4" to 36", cobblestones offer a wide variety of uses, textures and colors. The most popular for residential use is the Wisconsin Granite cobblestone, with a pink and blue hue to the granite stone. Some uses for cobblestone are as a bed edging, retaining walls, pond and stream liner, and as a stand alone accent piece. for more commercial or functional use, cobblestones are often used in the turf along streets or drives that lack curbs. These large boulders restrict cars from driving onto the turf in those areas.

Planting Bed Rock

The soil around landscape plantings is referred to as a planting bed. These beds will collect and germinate weed seeds if not covered by some form of weed barrier fabric and bedding material, such as rock/stone or mulch. The benefits of installing rock/stone instead of mulch is that rock/stone is a one-time installation. Rock/stone does not break down and decompose like mulch does, so therefore there is no need to top dress rock/stone every couple of years like there is when installing mulch.

We offer a wide selection in bedding rocks/stones for our clients to choose from. Below are just a few of the popular choices that we offer in our bedding stones.

What Does Natural Stone Cost?

With so many options on the natural stone pallet, there is no definitive answer to that question. Overall, some natural stones are more expensive than man made products of cement, such as pavers or retaining wall block. Bedding stones are slightly more expensive than mulch, but there is no every other year top-dressing cost. However, our example pricing page has some approximate pricing for your consideration. For an exact pricing of natural stone for your landscape, request a landscape quote from one of our landscape designers.
