Brick Patio RepairBrick Paver Contractor 1

When a brick patio is installed by a homeowner or inexperienced contractor, often without the proper equipment or knowledge, the chances for the patio to fail increases significantly. Brick patio repair has become an unfortunate specialty of ours over the years, repairing sinking and wavy patios that were improperly installed. Repairing a patio is often an option that should be considered, no matter what the appearance of the patio looks like. What may look like a complete disaster to a homeowner can actually be a uncomplicated repair to a trained professional. Often we can re-use the existing brick and base, saving our clients hundreds or thousands of dollars. Suburban Landscaping has been a brick patio installer since 1984 and has installed and repaired thousands of patios and driveways, gaining new techniques and tips that make our patios the most durable in the industry.

Brick Paver Guarantee

Being experts at brick paving, we have only had to preform warranty work on approximately 2% of the work we have installed since 1984. For more guarantee information, see our written guarantee on this site.

Brick Paver SealantsBrick Paver Driveway Contractor

Sealing your new brick patio or driveway is a personal choice, being used for both aesthetic and functional reasons. Sealers can offer visual improvement by intensifying the paver colors, and others will add a glossy sheen or "wet" look to the pavement. Other sealers offer some color enhancement and produce a low sheen, or a flat finish when applied. Sealers also offer many functional advantages, they can protect your pavers from possible stain penetration. They are useful around driveways, trash receptacles, restaurants, service bays other areas subject to stains, and where oil drippings are not wanted. Sealers can stabilize joint sand between pavers cleaned by vacuum sweeping equipment. They can help maintain the sand in the joints under high velocity water flows.

Brick Paver Lawn Edging

brick edging 1Another common use for brick pavers is installing pavers as lawn edging. Paver edging is installed flat, even with the lawn so lawn mowers can cut right over the tops, avoiding the need for string trimming. Paver edging also retains the mulch or stone bedding material in the beds. Another advantage of paver edging is the flexibility of design options, being available in many colors, sizes, and shapes. And most importantly, paver edging is the most resistant bed edging to heaving from winter ground freezing.

Retaining walls are only as good as their construction.  At Suburban Landscaping we adhere to the best construction practices and standards when designing and installing a retaining wall. When the project calls for it, our professional engineer will design the project.

Some key elements to retaining wall construction are:

  • Base preparation
  • Drainage
  • Setback
  • Geogrid or Deadman
  • Retention strength
  • Backfill compaction
  • Connecting devices

Segmental Bock, Stone, & Timber Retaining Walls

Compex Retaining Wall

Walls can be constructed using several different types of wall materials, such as natural stone, segmental blocks, railroad ties, and landscape timbers. Each product has its positives and negatives, and each has different pricing and uses. Timber walls are treated to prevent decay from the weather, while segmental blocks are made from concrete and withstand weather very well. Natural stone walls have a more rustic, or natural look while segmental block walls have a more uniformed or formal look.

How Much Does a Retaining Wall Cost?

Retaining Walls With Columns

There are several variables that determine the price of a custom retaining wall such as size, location, type and materials used. In general, the landscape industry prices walls according to Face Feet, which is the height of the wall x the length of the wall. Prices start as low as $15 per face foot and go as high as $45 per face foot. Retaining walls used as a bed edging are often less expensive. We would be happy to provide you with a free consultation and estimate, or visit our pricing guide for some approximate prices.

Outdoor Living

A well designed outdoor room is an extension of your home with endless possibilities - cooking, entertaining, lounging, dining, and even watching television. Similar to indoor rooms, outdoor rooms can have walls, entrance ways, ceilings, furniture, flooring, and even amenities such as fireplaces or built in seating. Designing and creating these rooms depends mostly on your lifestyle and needs,  whether it be a play area for children or an relaxing fireside reading area for adults. The days of concrete slab patios are over with outdoor rooms. These are some of the design elements that we use to create outdoor rooms:

Reflection Of Your Lifestyle

Outdoor living spaces are replacing the living room as preferred areas for relaxation. Expand your living space by allowing Suburban Landscaping to design a unique outdoor room as part of your landscape. Whether you are thinking about outdoor kitchens or a cozy backyard retreat, our designers meet with you to determine how you would like to use the space then translate those ideas into a design master plan.

Gather Around The Outdoor KitchenOutdoor Kitchen

Dinners on the patio have moved well beyond just the old charcoal grill, many outdoor rooms now feature partial or full kitchens. Built-in grills, wine racks, bar areas, sinks, pizza ovens, and refrigerators are all elements to consider in your new outdoor kitchen. Gather your family and friends around the outdoor kitchen island for conversation and catching up on daily events, just as you may do in your indoor kitchen.

Amenities

Fireplaces, fountains, and ponds have always been popular concepts in outdoor room designs. Suburban Landscaping can also incorporate the latest in light and sound technology. Weatherproof sound systems, televisions and landscape lighting can be used to create an atmosphere for entertaining or relaxation in the outdoors.

Create Room Boundariesoutdoor living

Water features, gazebos, low hedges, seat walls, trellises, columns and posts all can act as faux-walls to create boundaries for dining areas or quite areas. Room boundries can show separation between areas, defining the intended use of a space. Boundries, such as hedges or decorative seat walls, also direct family and guests to the rooms intended for public use and away from the rooms intended for private use. Comfortable and functional seating and outdoor dining space are essential elements for most outdoor rooms. Incorporating green space for children to play, zen gardens or small nooks for reading or contemplation are considerations for your outdoor living plan.

Bed Edging: Several Options

Edging your landscape beds provides a functional and fashionable border that sets your planting space apart from the rest of your lawn. Quality landscape bed edging defines the edges of the landscape, significantly increases the level of visual aesthetics, and adds value to your business or residence. Landscape edging comes in many types and a person can choose based upon their needs and budget. The main differences between each edging material is the cost and time to install. There are also special considerations of each material type.

Benefits Of Bed Edging

  • Defines the areas of landscaping
  • Keeps grass and weeds from growing into the beds.
  • Keeps mulch and rocks inside the landscaping beds from cluttering up the lawn
  • Protects the beds against erosion
  • Reduces the time it takes to string trim along bed edges
  • Provides a neat and clean appearance

Some of the most common bed edgings are shown below:

Brick Edging

Vinyl Edging

Aluminum Edging

Bullet Edgers

Other Bed Edging Materials

  • Wood Timbers

  • Cobble Stones
  • Spade Shovel Edging

Vinyl (Valley View) Edging

By far the worlds most popular bed edge, vinyl edging is the least expensive product to install, installed in volume for as little as $2.50 per linear foot. The vinyl edging, usually called by the brand name Valley View (made here in Chicago), is the most economical edging product available, however it does have some draw backs. Vinyl edging has been known to rise out of the ground and require re-installation. The reason the edging rises out of the ground is that because suring the winter the water in the ground freezes, thereby expanding, and pushing upward. In the spring the ground thaws and returns to a normal elevation, however, the  vinyl edging sometimes does not return to normal elevations with the soil. When this happens the vinyl edging is stuck above the ground or falls over and lies on top. Several things dictate whether the edging will return or not including proper stake installation, soil type, quality of edging, and the harshness of the particular winter.

Re-installing of vinyl edging is done by the man hour, which is the most cost effective method. The charge for re-installing the vinyl edging is $30.00 per man hour. An estimated number of man hours can be calculated for budgeting if needed or a cap of hours can be put on this work.

Natural Spade Edge

A natural bed edge, or shovel cut edge, is an alternative to installing a permenant bed edging material. See our page on spade edging for more details.
